HOW TO GET TO THE MENTAWAIS?​


Getting to the Mentawai Islands usually starts in Padang, West Sumatra. From Padang, you continue by boat to the Mentawai Islands, where your surf camp transfer will take you to your final destination. 

Getting to Mentawai

1. Fly to Padang
Fly to Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) in Padang. There are regular connections from major Indonesian cities such as Jakarta, Medan and Bali.
From the airport, travel into Padang or directly to the harbour, depending on your boat departure.

2. Padang to Mentawai - choose your boat transfer
There are several ways to travel from Padang to the Mentawai Islands.

Mentawai Connect - Shared and Private Speedboats
The speedboat is a faster and more reliable way to reach the Mentawai Islands.
  • The speedboat is heading directly towards Pei Pei Harbour (in front of Masokut Island, Siberut, 10 minutes from home) or Tua Pejat Harbour (Sipora).
  • A speedboat for every day of the week.
    Schedule:
    • Monday: 1PM to Pei Pei
    • Tuesday: 7AM to Pei Pei
    • Wednesday: 7AM to Tua Pejat(+1.30h to the island (+240USD/boat))
    • Thursday: 7AM to Pei Pei
    • Friday: 7 AM to Tua Pejat & 1PM to Pei Pei 
    • Saturday: 7AM to Pei Pei
    • Sunday: 1PM to Tua Pejat  (+1.30h to the island (+240USD/boat))
  • The journey takes around 3,5/4 hours door to door. 
  • The speedboat brings you to the harbour of Pei Pei which is only 10 minutes from the camp. 
  • Price if you book in advance: 120-140 USD per person, last minute price: 170 USD per person (1 surfboard and 1 piece of luggage included). 
  • This option allows you to arrive in the Mentawai Islands early in the morning, giving you plenty of time to settle in, relax, and make the most of your first day. Depending on the conditions, you could even squeeze in 2 surf sessions on your arrival day!f! 
  • Mentawai Connect Return service means a 24USD daily upgrade on your 10 days surf trip. 

Mentawai Fast Ferry 
The ferry is the cheaper option to travel to the Mentawai Islands, however it is not always reliable because it often gets cancelled or can take up to 6,5 hours. 
  • The ferry heads to Siberut directly or with 1 stop. 
  • Schedule:
    • Tuesday: Departs at 7 AM from Padang, arrives at 1:45 PM in Siberut (about 7h, as it does not go direct).
    • Thursday: Departs at 7 AM from Padang, arrives at 10:45 AM in Siberut (about 4 hours, as it goes direct).
    • Saturday: Departs at 7 AM from Padang, arrives at 1:45 PM in Siberut (about 7h as it does not go direct).
  • We pick you up from Siberut and bring you to the camp. This is approximately a 1 hour boat ride. 
  • Price 25 USD + extra costs for your surfboard (between 15-50 USD, depending on the weight).  We include this in your pacakge.


Leaving from Mentawai
You have the same option to leave from Siberut with the Ferry or leave from Pei Pei/Tua Pejat with a speedboat.

  • 7:00 AM from Tua Pejat to Siberut
  • 1:30PM from Siberut to Tua Pejat
This ferry will work for you if you are staying in Tua Pejat before us and you want to come to the island after OR if you are in the island and you want to go to Tua Pejat after us. 

Mentawai Connect - Shared and Private Speedboats
Every day of the week - you choose location pick up/drop off. Prices go from 5.000.000 IDR/boat/way.

  • SLOW FERRY: from USD$15/way with bed. Takes 10-12 hours. Schedule is not clear.
  • MENTAWAI FAST FERRY: USD$25/way + USD$20-40/surfboard bag fee . Takes between 3.30h and 6.30h. Often cancels.
  • SHARED SPEEDBOAT: from USD$140/way. Takes around 3-4h. Best recommended.
  • PRIVATE SPEEDBOAT: ask us for price and availability.​ ​Best for last minute emergencies.
